The Desire For A Kaleidoscope And The Power Of Hope

The desire for a kaleidoscope and the power of hope

There are many different types of toys. However, some of them seem almost magical, or at least they have seemed so to us. To me, the kaleidoscope belongs to these, because it allows you to see the world in so many different shapes and colors. When I was little, I had a desire to get a kaleidoscope, and when I got it, it became forever one of my favorite toys. However, pronouncing the name of it is not that simple.

Today we will look at the power of hope and how it can help us achieve the impossible. We are going to use a Christmas story, but the message is the same regardless of the time of year!

I remember it was Christmas, it was decorated in the whole house. Many of the decorations hung from the wonderful tree that almost touched the ceiling, adorned with colorful balls and glitter. All this in front of the eyes of a six-year-old girl who believed in magic, and in Santa Claus.

Boy walking in snow

The perfect gift

I went for a walk with my father and we went and looked at toys. As soon as I saw this particular toy, I just knew it had to be my Christmas present. No other gift would suffice. It was a simple tube decorated with a bear family on the outside. They were celebrating Christmas, and the little bears were decorating the Christmas tree – colorful balls, glittering stars, angels…

The bear was my favorite animal at the time. I wore a bear pajamas, a sweater with a photo of a real bear and lots of teddy bears of all types, colors and sizes. Everything from brown bears to polar bears and many in between. The white polar bear, which lived in the snow, was my favorite. I even had a pink bear and one with a red bow tie with white dots.

But it was not just the bears that made that tube catch my attention. I was amazed at how you could see so many different combinations of shapes and colors when you looked through it. To others it may have seemed strange, but to me it was beautiful. Stars become flowers, flowers become circles, circles become diamonds and so on to an infinity of mixed shapes and colors, so different and yet so symmetrical. When I looked into the tube, it made me feel that I could travel to other worlds and experience thousands of adventures in a single moment.

The desire for a kaleidoscope

I told my dad I wanted it to be my Christmas present.

“Dad, Dad, can I have the pipe with the nice bears?”

“The kaleidoscope?” replied my father with a wide smile.

“Kaleddjen…”, I said with my special smile that I got when something aroused my insatiable curiosity.

“We can ask Santa Claus, but then you will learn to pronounce the word first,” my father said as he laughed.

At home, I repeatedly tried to utter the confused word. Kaladdi, kalejdy, kaljado, kallidossy, kaljedockoppi… but it was to no avail, I simply could not say it. My older brother laughed at all the words I had invented in a few moments and repeated the word to me – KALEJDOSKOP. I kept trying to learn the name, but since I could never get it right, I did not think my wish for a kaleidoscope would be fulfilled by Santa.

Then came Christmas

Christmas Eve finally came, and when it was time to open Christmas presents, I was a little sad. I was still trying to pronounce the name of the pat I wanted so much. But I could not get past the first letters. I opened my first gift, sure it would not be the tube of beautiful bears. But when I opened it, there it was! Because it was just the gift I wanted so much, I was so happy that I thought out loud, “Wow! THE KALEIDOSCOPE I wanted!

Every effort has its reward. The girl in this Christmas story was about to lose faith that she would ever get the Christmas present she wanted so much. Her desire to have a kaleidoscope was so sincere, but she just could not say the name of it, no matter how hard she tried. But when she received the gift and she felt the great joy, she managed to pronounce the name without any problems at all. She will no doubt never forget how to pronounce the word kaleidoscope. She will also not forget that Christmas and all that it meant to her.
