Getting away from routine is something we must do to connect with the creativity that our daily lives sometimes snatch away from us. Going to a museum, a concert or an interesting exhibition can also help free us from the stress we normally accumulate during the week.

We may not have the time or opportunity to engage in these activities regularly, but most of us at least have internet or TV, so we can watch a good movie.

Personally, I get a real boost from watching a movie that has been recommended or that I have waited a long time to see. I continue to be excited about watching a new movie because movies are like magic on a screen for many of us.

These five movies will open your mind and your soul.

“Amour” was directed by the great Austrian director Michael Haneke and is a love story where the protagonist suffers from a degenerative disease.

Her husband tries to do as much as possible to make her life dignified. It will remind you of the plot of “The Notebook”, but let me say that the quality and authenticity of the characters can not be compared.

In the film we see true love, for example in the scenes where we see the suffering and anxiety of having a loved one in pain. It reflects universal dilemmas, such as the right way to handle a situation that is beyond our control at the end of life.

The film emphasizes the importance of the small details and how the simplest of memories are those that come back at the end of life. The ending is an allegory of death, poetry and generosity that will not leave you untouched.

This film is relatively new, but has received very good reviews where it has been shown. At first, the film seems simple, but it gradually grows in complexity and leaves you lost as well as confused about what will happen.

It tells the story of a student and his teacher – a student who comes from a dysfunctional family and environment that does not encourage an interest in literature. The student surprises the teacher with the stories he brings to class, and that is when the relationship becomes obsessed.

In parallel with this relationship between student and teacher, they begin to develop other stories, and their ties cross the boundaries of what can be considered education. Through the student’s stories, the teacher sees similarities with what he experienced during life (he is a failed writer and his marriage hides unexpected secrets).

Doctor Zhivago is a classic. If you have already seen it, I suggest you see it again because it offers different perspectives depending on what phase of life you are in. And you have not seen it, you must do so as soon as possible. It is pure poetry that is transformed into images on the canvas.

The film takes place during the Russian revolution against the Tsars. The two protagonists are Yuri Zjivago and Lara – two lovers in a bad time and even more complicated emotional situation because they are both married.

Lara is a woman who seems full of innocence, but who is not; she is passionate and has lived a complicated life. Yuri Zjivago, on the other hand, is a member of the closed circle of society. He is a man who represents man’s noblest principles… but for love he must act in a way where these principles are questioned.

The dialogue in the film, the images and the dilemmas all the characters face will arouse the existentialism of some of Russia’s best classic writers.

In “The 400 Beats”, the legendary French director Truffaut pays homage to the cinema in large letters. He transports us to Paris in the 1950s to tell the dramatic story of Antoine – a child who runs from one problem to another in an attempt to escape endless institutional failures and a threatening home.

His mother becomes pregnant and an involuntary, single parent. Later, she chooses to date continuously, and Antoine is ignored and hated. He thinks he’s the cause of her problem.

Antoine goes through all kinds of hard and unfair situations, but his lively and positive attitude allows him to find logic in his life, despite these circumstances.

I’ll leave you with another of director Michael Haneke’s films, “Caché”. The existential analysis in the film and the way it grips the audience with winks and camera games is not just a movie, but pure psychology.

The protagonist, George, begins to receive strange ribbons that indicate that someone is guarding his home and family. Each time, the bands and drawings become more amazing, and he can not relate to anything in life.

Gradually he begins to piece everything together. In this film , he wants to make it clear that everything you do in life is saved in other people’s minds, even if it is not saved in yours… perhaps we are many who suppress events that are unpleasant.

When you watch these five movies, you will open your mind and your soul. The films can also offer you many lessons and evoke strong emotions…
