The artist Oscar Claude Monet is one of the most famous French painters. He was born on November 14, 1840 in Paris, France.

His family moved to Le Havre when he was five years old and his father started working as a merchant. His mother Louise was a singer.

Le Havre is a coastal town where Monet learned a lot about the sea. Impressionism focused on paintings and representations of nature.

Monet’s paintings reflect the ever-changing aspect of light and weather.

The future artist Oscar Claude Monet starts painting

As a 15-year-old, Monet sold paintings and very detailed sketches of sailboats. His aunt Marie-Jeanne Lecadre, also a painter, had a great influence on the young painter.

She encouraged Monet to study art with a local painter.

However, his paintings developed properly when he met Eugéne Boudin. Boudin introduced Monet to outdoor painting, which was not uncommon at this time.

Because of this, he spent his next 60 years focusing on visible phenomena. He also implemented effective methods that changed the perception of color.

Monet went against his family’s wishes and chose not to attend the École nationale supérieure des Beaux-Arts in Paris. He met Camille Pissarro while working at the Académie Suisse.

After being forced to fight in the Algerian war, he returned to Paris, where he met Renoir, Cézanne, Whistler and Manet.

During this period, Monet discovered Japanese patterns, and this influence can be seen in his work.

The young Monet and Salon des Refusés

In 1870 he married Camille Doncieux. The family moved to London during the Franco-Prussian War. They then returned to Argentuil in Paris.

The term “impressionism” was coined after his painting Impression, soleil levant, which was shown in 1874 at the first independent art exhibition for Impressionist painters.

This art exhibition meant that Impressionism also reached the Salon des Refusés in Paris. Despite some criticism, the Impressionists had several exhibitions.

Monet’s works and other marriages

In 1876, Monet met Ernest and Alice Hoschedé. They built a fantastic friendship with the couple Monet, who later moved to Vétheuil to be close to them.

Both Camille and Ernest Hoschedé passed away a few years later, which led to Monet and Alice getting closer and in 1892 married.

Monet moved to Giverny. There he began painting landscapes, which included his famous Water Lilies.

Monet began to have vision problems in 1907, and in 1923 he was almost completely blind. His vision improved slightly after he underwent surgery for cataracts.

Unfortunately, he died of lung cancer in 1926, at the age of 86.

The painter’s famous home has a fantastic garden with a small pond. His legacy passed to the French Académie des Beaux-Arts in 1966.

His paintings, such as Haystacks (1890-1891) and Rouen Cathedral (1894), were often included in exhibitions.
