Dakota legend of the woman and the wolves

This ancient Dakota legend tells the story of a beautiful young woman who lived in a Native American village in North America. Her neighbors did not respect her. She was easily intimidated and obeyed everyone without hesitation to try to gain their respect.

One day a young man spoke kindly to her. She was strongly affected by this treatment, as she had never experienced anything like it. She was imprisoned by the young man. Slowly but surely they fell in love and finally he asked to marry her. The young woman’s father did not pay much attention to the courtship, and allowed their marriage without thinking more about it.

The young man promised to always treat her with kindness and respect. He also said that he would love her for the rest of his life and that he would make her happy. Shortly after they got married, however, the young man began to treat his wife badly.

Legend has it that he humiliated her and beat her. No one in the tribe came forward to help her, so she decided to escape and save herself from this sad existence.

The young woman walked across fields and through forests. She wanted to get as far away from her husband as possible before he noticed she was gone and started looking for her. She spent several days walking, until she finally collapsed in a remote place.

The woman fell asleep. Suddenly she was awakened by a sound. In front of her stood the dreaded leader of the wolf pack. She had heard of this wolf; people said he was wild and cruel. However, the wolf just looked at her and slowly came closer. He told her she could live with his flock if she wanted to.

The woman hesitated, but something in her heart told her that she could trust the herd leader. She decided to follow him to a place where the rest of the wolves were waiting. They welcomed her with kindness and respect. Legend has it that no one had ever treated her so well.

According to Dakota legend, the herd leader asked what she wanted to eat. She replied that her favorite food was buffalo. So he sent the other wolves away to hunt buffalo so she could eat buffalo meat. A few hours later, the wolves returned with plenty of food.

The herd leader asked her how she ate her meat. She replied that she was cooking it. All the wolves started looking for things she needed to cook the meat and eventually they found all the utensils she needed.

Slowly but surely the young woman stopped being afraid and insecure. The wolves treated her with respect and affection, so much so that she learned to love and respect herself. She felt at home and became a member of the flock.

One day the leader asked to speak to her again. He said people were preparing for the buffalo hunt. He said that if the pack of wolves got in the way, the people would most likely kill them. The Dakota legend says that the wolf leader asked the young woman for help to avoid danger.

The young woman concluded that she had to intervene against humans in favor of the wolves. She woke up at dawn and began to return to her tribe. She reached the top of a hill and saw a group of hunters tracking buffalo. They also saw her and came closer. One of the men recognized her and told the others about it.

It had been a long time, over three years. The young woman’s mother and father were happy with the news. They had missed their daughter. They did not realize how much they loved her until they lost her. The young woman asked the group to leave the wolves alone during their hunt.

To convince them, she told them what the wolves had done for her. She also asked the hunters to give the wolves some of the prey from the hunt. They accepted the request.

The Dakota legend says that after several days of hunting, the hunters returned with what they had killed. The young woman climbed the cliff and howled, just like a real wolf. When she was done, she walked away from the booty. Then thousands of wolves came to eat the food humans had left for them. The woman returned home and everyone saw that she was no longer the fearful girl they once knew.
