Negative Attitudes In The Workplace
In this article, we will look at four negative attitudes in the workplace that we must all avoid. They will directly affect your performance and the good mood at work.
We will also look at some attitudes and characteristics that will have a very positive effect on you and your colleagues.
Four negative attitudes in the workplace
These are the four characteristics you should avoid when you are at work:
- Pride
- Arrogance
- Self-sufficiency
- Stubbornness
Pride
Pride is not directly an attitude that generates sympathy. People who think they are superior tend to be repulsed by their surroundings.
Even if they try to hide it with false humility, in the end they always show who they really are. False humility is, if possible, an even worse trait.
Of course, pride is important to have, but it must not be exaggerated.
Arrogance
Behaviorally speaking, the attitude that stands out most in this respect is probably systematic contempt for other people’s arguments and opinions. There is also an obvious link to pride – the first attitude.
Self-sufficiency
This is also similar to the two attitudes above. In fact, one can say that self-sufficiency is a manifestation or consequence of arrogance.
This is someone who thinks he is better than everyone else, and his arrogance means he does not care what others say.
Stubbornness
This negative attitude refers to people who have difficulty with or refuse to change their views or opinions.
In the workplace, these are people who believe that only their opinion is valid and refuse to change even though they are presented with evidence and good arguments.
You always work better together when you listen and take into account other people’s opinions.
Positive attitudes to counteract negative attitudes in the workplace
Having a good work environment is something that basically everyone appreciates. Many positive work attitudes can actually counteract the four negatives we mentioned above.
Conflict and problem solving
Knowing how to react to possible problems that may arise in the workplace is a true asset, not only for the company, but also for yourself.
Creativity and initiative
There are times when you do not share the ideas you come up with for fear of how others will react. But creativity and initiative are highly valued attitudes in many companies.
Teamwork
This is without a doubt one of the most valued capabilities of any business. Recruiters often test the candidates’ teamwork to see how they get along with others.
Knowing how to work well with others and be part of a work team is a very positive asset.
Tolerance for criticism
Criticism is something that many do not like. It’s not pleasant for someone outside to come and question your work, but in many cases the comments can be constructive and actually help you become more effective.
Adaptability
Sometimes you can make changes to the work environment so that it suits you better. Sometimes, however, these changes are not possible, and then you have to be able to adapt to the situation.
Planning
Planning, and especially doing well, is one of the skills that can best help you reduce stress at work.
It is an ability that helps us establish a list of priorities and then use it to make appropriate decisions at the right time.
Using a work diary correctly and then following it will save a lot of time and resources.
As you can see, negative attitudes at work can do great harm, but there are positive behaviors that can counteract them and improve the workplace for you and others.
Make it your New Year’s promise to be a positive force.
